Chapter 6

In Which Adam Gets Ready to Go to The Culinary Institute of America

I had a milestone birthday this summer (no, don’t ask) and a certain very generous person (hi Mom!) gave me a present of a numerically-appropriate amount of money. After a bit of thinking (and a bit prodding by my wife), I decided to enroll in the five-day Basic Training Culinary Boot Camp at The Culinary Institute of America in Hyde Park, New York.

In short, I’ll spend five days in cooking classes and four nights eating in the world-renown restaurants on the campus of the school. I don’t know exactly what will be covered in the classes; I expect some of it to be old hat for me, but even for those things I hope to get some pointers and/or learn some new techniques.

I don’t know how much time I’ll have between class and dinner, or how tired I’ll be at the end of the day, but I’m going to try very hard to write at least a short blog entry each day. At a minimum I should be able to list the skills we covered; if there’s time and if my brain hasn’t turned to mush I’ll also write about some of the things I will have learned.

The class starts on February 7th, 2011 but I may write something on the 6th about getting ready for the class and my drive to Hyde Park.
